Hard freeze

The weather forecast calls for low twenties tonight.  So Sharon and I have been busy harvesting and processing veggies.  We pretty much picked the root crops except the youngest of turnips.  Cut most the bok choi and Swiss chard, some kale, collards, and lots of spinach.  I have more to do today if it warms above freezing.

I also found some mushrooms growing on one of my shitake logs.  I didn’t except them until spring. They were on just one log so I put the log in the garage. The shiitakes are just past the button stage, not big enough to harvest yet. I see a bok choy, shitake stir fry in my near future.

Red Turkey Hard Winter Wheat

image

Matt planting wheat.  I am experimenting with winter wheat, growing a heirloom called red turkey.  We planted about 900 sq ft which will hopefully be productive. We shall see… germination looked to be a little low.  Red turkey was brought to the US in the late 1800s by Mennonites from Russia.  Finding the seed was difficult.  Matt is using an Earthway planter to drop the seed an inch deep.  I experimented with a couple of different plates.  The Earthway chard plate seemed best. Below is the wheat a little more than a week later.  Can’t wait to make some bread!
